Twitter Followers – Do I or Don’t I?

TAGS: None

In a previous post called “Is Twitter Useless?” we talked about how following people or businesses was kind of like saying hello. The polite thing to do is to say hello in return (follow them as well). Following them is the only way you are going to be able to see what they are saying and them following you is the only way they are going to see what you are saying.

canned spam

With that said, however, you do not necessarily want to follow everyone that follows you. Unfortunately, there are those that use Twitter for purposes other than what it was intended for. Simply said, there’s a lot of spammers. Spammers tweet the same stuff many many times during the day hoping you will click on the link and buy whatever they are selling. They’re selling everything from the latest fat burner pill to the latest and greatest software. These people have no intention of buying anything from you or helping you spread your message in any way. Don’t bother to follow them back.

For those that are new to Twitter, you will probably find that you have followed some of these people not realizing what they were doing. That’s not a problem. Just go to your ‘following’ list and unfollow them. That’s enough to take care of it. You will not be able to see what they are saying but they will still see what you are saying as long as they continue to follow you. Chances are though that they will stop following you once they realize that you unfollowed them. And that’s fine.

The thing that you need to be very sure of is that you follow your customers, potential customers and local businesses. Check your list of followers often to make sure you are following everyone that you need to be. “Often” can be what you want it to be but I would suggest that you do it at least once a week. When you are first starting out with social media, daily would be a good idea. You want to be sure your message is getting out to as many customers and potential customers as possible.
